Re: Americans
Alexander Graham Bell was British, he was born in Scotland. Second Antonio Meucci demonstrated working models of the telephone 15 years before Bell, he tried to patent it but was unable to afford it.
Now that I think about it, light bulbs were around before Edison himself so he couldn't have invented them, maybe he made a commercially successful version like Ford did with the motor car?

Re: Americans
to clear up the telephone. it was invented by an Italian, Antonio Meucci. Alexander Graham Bell was Scottish, he just happened to be living in the USA when he patented the telephone (Meucci never bothered as he he couldn't afford it, Bell hated the telephone and famously refused to have one in his study).

Re: Americans
Saying that somebody "happened to be living in America" just doesn't make sense. As far as I'm concerned, when you live here, you're an American, because we don't have a nationality. Otherwise, you could argue that every US president wasn't "actually" American

Points of interest:
- 28 December 1871 — Antonio Meucci files a patent caveat (n.3335) in the U.S. Patent Office titled "Sound Telegraph", describing communication of voice between two people by wire.
- 1874 — Meucci, after having renewed the caveat for two years, fails to find the money to renew it. The caveat lapses.
- 6 April 1875
— Bell's U.S. Patent 161,739 "Transmitters and Receivers for Electric
Telegraphs" is granted. This uses multiple vibrating steel reeds in
make-break circuits. - 10 March 1876
— The first successful telephone transmission of clear speech using a
liquid transmitter when Bell spoke into his device, “Mr. Watson, come
here, I want to see you.” and Watson heard each word distinctly.

Re: Americans
Bell was living in America, he wasn't a citizen. He eventually became a citizen of Canada where he died. the US presidents were all US citizens and therefore American.

Regardless, the patent was filed in America, so it's an American invention

Re: Americans
i'm afraid it doesn't work like that. credit goes to the nationality of the inventor. Most of Albert Einstein's work is credited to America because he was an American citizen. that's how it works and that's how it should work. if memory serves one or two other US invetions were patented over here. i think one of them was the revolver

Re: Americans
That's right, the patent of the atom bomb was made in America, so it's an American invention. The US government analyzed and granted the patent, so it's technically American.
And you can have the revolver, but we want the lightbulb and telephone

Re: Americans
Patents don't have a direct relationship to the inventor, they have a direct relationship to the guy who paid for the patent, they are not always one and the same.

Re: Americans
technically John is right, but generally it is the inventer that patens it. either way credit is given to the nationality of the person, not the country it was patented in. several vaccines were patented in europe by scientists who held american passports, but who weren't all born in america. even though the vaccines weren't patented in america, they are still american inventions. it really is pointless arguing about this, it doesn't matter how we think it should work, that's the way it does work. incidentally, over the last 100 years the USA has been credited with more world changing inventions than any other country. from velcro and the radio to space travel.

i like some aspects of america, and i dislike other aspects. as for the people, i take them on a case by case basis. in every country you're going to get nice people, and not nice people. and i learnt a long time ago....er not that i'm old, that i really don't give a cr** what other people think of me. as long as they respect my opinion and my right to it then they can hate me all they want lol
