nope fallout is set in the future, different timeline to ours.
Worlds practically ends after a short nuclear war. You play a person who is living in a 'vault' (like from those cave things in the film Armageddon)
You need to leave the vault to find a 'water chip'. Just google it cos it's a MINT game (no really it is) plus earlier on I gave a link wher e oyu can get it legally for free.

I love fallout's setting, "What if cultural change stopped in the 1950s but science and technology carried on?". And exploring the ruins of it in first person with great graphics is a pleasure(it's just a shame the RPG aspects weren't carried on as well as the setting).In fact almost any setting outside the traditional medieval europe with elves and magic is a setting I love, having said that though Baldur's Gate II(AD&D 2e) is still my all time favourite game.
