Ok mainly directed at those in England (tbh don't really matter)

but half (99.9%) the crap you learnt at school is never used. I.E quadratic equations, what a christian thinks about abortion, analysing poetry line by line word by word. (wonder why so many people hate shakespear? Could have somthing to do with pissing gov FORCING people (well not literally that would be wrong) to read it. Let those he like shakespear read it listen to it and perform it. But to be frank..I don't care, I'm sure my future employer won't care.

Anyway what I really want to ask is about Religious studies and science.

O.K I must have spent 2 lessons on human evolution; Darwin and all who the gov feel is important to put on our money BUT feels I need to know more about christianity.

I've had more lessons on god creating the world and people etc than actual science lesson giving the current theory. WTF? Is this the same for everyone else?

My secoundry has just been awarded science and maths things ontop of the arts and music (just means we get more money) BUT theyre more bothered about god..even tho it's a public school (my other option was a Catholic school, HA)

Is this the same everywhere else?:across u.k but also for those in other countries. I heard some parts of u. s don't even allow evolutiuon to be taught.

ta in advance

I would say that you don't have to learn simply what you will literally be using later on in life. Because:

1) It provides you with skills that are cross-transferable (analysing Shakespeare is not a completely futile exercise in my opinion, even you do not appreciate the layers of meaning and elegance).

2) It provides a more informed choice about what you do go on to do in future (i take it you don't plan to be a Shakespeare critic?)

3) It is useful as a purely intellectual exercise. Plus, if we are only taught how to do things that currently exist, we are more likely to stop 'moving society forward' through innovation.

Scientific theories at school level are generally not very complex. After all, one of the more desirable aspects of darwinian evolution is that it's supposedly simple.

But learning what people think is a much more socially applicable skill. Ignorance of other peoples' beliefs, or intolerance is far more likely to cause problems to you in later life than being ignorant of the intiricate details of evolution.

the things with maths is that there are actual set answers you can't just make random crap up and get marks for showing you can express an opinion, i have a friend who got a b in gcse rs for writing god, Jesus and the bible as the answer to every question

I think school is the extreme of ignorance. For great minds, its a waste of time.
While I was always excel in my grades, I always thought school was almost useless, and never really studied hard.

I have to consider, though:
- People normally wouldn't study/see/read interesting or useful things outside school, therefore it's is a good way to provide some level of knowledge to an uninformed mass.
- How would the employeer know you are competent?
- It's a extremelly usefull social tool. if there wasn't school kids wouldn't be sociable.
- As people(the most) wouldn't do useful things during the time it's given, they wouldn't develop a better mental and intelectual capability.

And learning about other people's stances on moral issues is important if we want to give people the opportunity to make their own decisions on such matters. Or we could just abort all babies, I mean, that would remove the necessity of learning 'crap'.If we only learnt practical shizz in school, life would be much less interesting.

Shakespeare is nice, but anything that takes two paragraphs to say a sentence is wasting my time, especially when you need to reread the damn thing twenty times over just to get what that sentence actually is.

School should give you a wide curriculum so you can get a feel for what you like and/or are good at, and as you move up in academia you hone in it, maybe even specialise in it. Which is great if you're a scientific/engineery/computerising/mathematical kind of person. If you're not then at least it's something interesting to you before you start submerging into the job market.

oh the social side I don't mind (tho it aint all gud) just sitting having to sit through rubbish.

I.E my ict teacher actually agrees that the system is a load of crap. R.S teacher could put more effort into it (then again that would make the lesson worse)

to me school seems to.....general.

learn random stuff and end up just wasting time getting some letters on a paper. I want to come out of school knowing stuff I'm gunna use. E.G for a job.
