this is a hard choice to make, i think overall i'd have to split it between 3 books.

I must always recommend:
The Master and Margarita (great anti soviet writing about Satan in Moscow running amok, best translation is by the couple who did the recent war and peace translation)
Cyrano De Bergerac (play, translated by Brian Hooker or Anthony Burgess)
anything by Sarah Vowell, she's a positive delight when it comes to humorous american historical writing.

I enjoy reading the "dark tower" series by Stephen king as well. Though they are a bit fantasy I like to see them as the "harry potter meets western" for adults
